What is Tarot Therapy?
The tarot is a collection of 78 cards, developed over centuries, which together form an amazing tool for personal, psychological and spiritual insight.
I always say that the tarot contains everything that we can encounter in life. For every situation, emotion, or thought, there is a tarot card that depicts it. That's why integrating the tarot into a therapeutic counselling practice is so powerful.
In tarot therapy, the tarot cards are combined with the counsellor's therapeutic knowledge and skills, to deliver a person-centered experience tailored to the client. I create a safe and welcoming space for you to talk about anything at all - and the cards help to fill in the gaps.
Tarot is illustrated with rich symbology, so there is lots to explore. It's a perfect addition to therapy for those who'd describe themselves as visual, artistic, or creative, as it allows us to explore topics deeply without relying solely on language.
It's also hands-on; I love it when my clients shuffle a deck while we're talking, it's a great calming stimulus. I'll often ask you to draw a card, whether at random or through purposeful choice, that can help to explore what we're discussing. Using tarot this way is flexible and intuitive, and clients find it immensely empowering. Each card has a message, with some extra insight to add to any conversation.
Much like conventional counselling helps you to gain skills for navigating life, tarot therapy adds an additional layer, where the tarot itself is now also in your toolkit. Knowing how to use the cards for emotional, spiritual and practical guidance is a valuable skillset, which I love helping my clients to develop.
